The Wellness Advice Making It Worse

I read a post last week from a physician with 280,000 followers.

She described her "anti-burnout routine that works :)"

Her routine? Check your cycle. Brain dump. Visualize. And (conveniently) monitor it all on her WHOOP band.

I've been sitting with this newsletter because I want to build our community without spreading hostility, but I believe it's worth saying:

This is not what burnout prevention or recovery is.

OBSERVE
What Burnout Actually Is (And Isn't)

Let me be clear about what burnout is:

Burnout is a chronic, systemic response to prolonged occupational stress. It typically develops over months to years. It affects memory, immune function, emotional regulation, and identity.

People do not recover from it by picturing their perfect day.

Here's what the post I read describes: a stressful week. Possibly a difficult period.

But conflating a stressful chapter with burnout—to an audience of hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom are silently suffering—does real damage.

Because it tells people that:

  • Burnout is manageable with the right morning routine
  • If you're burning out, you're simply not tracking the right metrics
  • The problem is your HRV score, not your job demands
  • You can biohack your way out of a systemic issue

What it doesn't say:

Nothing about workload. Nothing about the institutions and structures that create the conditions for burnout in the first place. Nothing about the fact that the people most at risk are often the least able to simply opt out and track their way to a 71% recovery score.

Burnout is not something you dip in and out of across a working week. It is not a bad HRV score that a brain dump can fix by Friday. It is not a cycle-tracking problem.

And it is absolutely not something a wearable device can prevent or resolve.

PRACTICE
How to Recognize Burnout Advice That Won't Help You

Not all burnout content is created equal. Here's how to tell the difference between what might actually help and what's just wellness theatre:

Red flags that the advice won't work:

✗ It focuses entirely on individual optimization (your routine, tracking, mindset)
✗ It implies burnout is a short-term state that you can fix in a week or two
✗ It sells you something (a device, supplement, guide)
✗ It says nothing about systems
✗ It treats burnout like a performance problem

Green flags that the advice might actually help:

✓ It acknowledges burnout is chronic and systemic
✓ It talks about rest, boundaries, and reduction (not optimization)
✓ It addresses job demands and resources, not just responses to workload
✓ It names institutional and structural factors
✓ It suggests professional support when needed
✓ It recognizes that recovery takes months, not days

REFLECT
The Optimization Trap

I'm not questioning the sincerity of the person who wrote that post. Physicians are among the occupational groups most at risk of burnout.

But the complexity of a serious condition gets flattened when a medical authority, a large platform, and an affiliate relationship occupy the same post.

If you're burned out and scrolling through endless posts about morning routines, productivity hacks, meal prep, and optimization feels like one more thing you're failing at, I see you. I've been there. And it gets better. But not because you found the right supplement or the perfect brain dump template.

It gets better when you stop, when you rest, when you let yourself be exactly where you are.
